Crispy and spicy chicken pakkavada

Chicken pakkavada is a spicy and flavorful snack you can definitely try for an unforgettable family time. Pakkavada is my family’s all time favorite snack . We used to make different varieties of pakkavada for our weekend snacks. I think pakkavada is the most easiest snack I have ever tired. No need of special ingredients. Onion and besan will always available in our store room. Instead of bakery items I think pakkavada is the best option we can go for.

I tried chicken pakkavada this time. Before I made this pakkavada, my hubby had his doubts. He told me, “Just fry that chicken and give it to me; I’ll eat it and you make regular onion pakkavada” (He prefers chicken fried over other chicken dishes). I gave him a grin before gracefully sneaking into kitchen to begin try this pakkavada. What can I say, the this special pakkavada with chicken was a huge hit. He tasted it before me. My kids enjoyed it as well. Because I added all the leaf verities, it was really crispy and fragrant.

How to make Chicken pakkavda?


1 1/4 cup of Besan flour(kadala mavu)
2 piece of boneless chicken
For chicken
1/6 spn. of turmeric powder
1/4 spn. of chilli powder
1/4 spn. of garam masala
For pakkavada
1 no of Onion
2 no of green chilli
1 small piece of ginger
A handful of leaves( I took coriander leaves,mint leaves and cumin leaves)
1/4 spn. of chilli powder
1/6 spn. of turmeric powder
1/4 spn. of garam masala/chicken masala
Salt as required
Oil for fry


Step 01

Cook boneless chicken along with turmeric powder,chilli powder,garam masala and little bit of salt.Allow to cool and shred the chicken using grinder or by hand.

Step 02

Mix finely sliced onion,chopped leaves,crushed ginger with hands.

Step 03

Add besan, shredded chicken,chilli powder,turmeric powder and chicken masala in to the onion mix.

Step 04

Add 3 tbsp. of water and knead well to make a pakkavada texture as shown in the picture. Do not add too much of water.

Step 05

Heat oil in a pan. Deep fry pakkavada till golden brown color.


Note :
You can add semolina/rava for making the pakkavada more crispy
Do not add too much of water because if the mix is watery, pakkavada will not be crispy.
