Coconut rice recipe – Traditional south Indian recipe with grated coconut, roasted gram, mung daal, green chilies, etc…I have seen this recipe in a magazine and found it is easy to make. I tried this on a weekday for kids tiffin and it came out very well.
If you have cooked rice at home, you can make this dish within five minutes. Just season the rice with grated coconut and other pulses and your coconut rice is ready to serve. There is no need for any side dish for making this trice. My kids loved this crunchy and chewy rice

Ingredients
- 1 cup of Grated Coconut
- 2 cup of rice
- 2 no of Green chilies
- 1/2 spn. of mustard seeds.
- 1/2 spn. of mustard seeds.
- 1/2 spn. of cumin seeds
- 2 tbsp. of a roasted gram(pottukadala)
- 2 tbsp. of urd daal (uzhunnuparippu)
- 2 - 3 no of red chilies
- 1/8 spn. of Asafoetida
- 2 springs of curry leaves
- 1 spn. of coriander leaves
- 1 spn. of Ghee/Butter
- salt as required
Method
Step 1
Soak rice for 15 minutes. Drain it. Cook rice drain and keep aside.
Step 2
Heat ghee or butter in a pan
Step 3
Splutter mustard seeds.
Step 4
Add cumin seeds, roasted gram, and mung dal. Fry till urad dal turns into golden brown color.
Step 5
Add chopped green chilies, chopped coriander leaves, and curry leaves. Saute for a while. Add asafoetida and stir.
Step 6
Add grated coconut and Stir well.
Step 7
Add cooked rice and mix well. Sprinkle salt and mix well for 1 more minute. Cover the pan and serve after 2 minutes.
