Dry Prawns Chutney Powder (Chemmeen Podi)


Traditional chutney powder of Kerala. Tangy and spicy dried prawns chutney powder.


Chutney powders are everyone’s all-time favorite. Sometimes a chutney powder can make magic in our meals. We used to serve chutney powders with Idli, sambar,dosa, appam etc… Dry prawns chutney powder is made with dried prawns, shallots, garlic, and grated coconut. This tangy flavored chutney powder goes well with rice. The mouth-watering aroma of dry prawns chutney powder makes this dish my all-time favorite. I have already tried Thenga chammanthi podi (Coconut chutney powder),Chemmeen podi(Dry prawns chutney powder) and Idli podi (Urd dal chutney powder).

Ingredients

250g of Dry Prawns
200g of grated coconut
10-15 no of Dried red chillies/Chilli flakes
1/2 spn. of Cumin seeds
5 no of Shallots
6 no of garlic cloves
1 lemon-sized Tamarind
Salt as required
1 tbsp. of Oil

Dry Prawns Chutney Powder Preparation Method

Step 01


Clean and wash dry prawns. Drain well and dry roast using a clay pot of Kadai. Stir well and when the prawns become a crunchy consistency, remove from flame. Keep aside.

Step 02


Heat oil in a frying pan. Fry red chilies and keep them aside.Add grated coconut, cumin seeds, shallots, garlic, tamarind to the same oil and fry till you get a nice aroma.

Step 03


Add Roasted prawns, fried red chilies and fry for 1-2 minutes in low flame.

Step 04


Allow the roasted ingredients to cool completely.

Step 05


Add salt and mix well.

Step 06


Transfer the mixture to a mixer grinder and make a coarse powder.

Step 07


Store it in an air tight container.
