Thakkali Thokku | Tomato Pickle

Perfect side dish for chapathi, dosa or even curd rice

A simple and easy to make side dish with tomato. Thokku is a kind of pickle famous in South India especially in Tamil Nadu. There are so many varieties in thokku like onion thokku,mango thokku,onion tomato thokku etc… This tomato thokku is very easy to prepare side dish and is ideal for travel. Thakkali thokku goes well with idIdli,Dosa or even with Curd rice. Hope you all will try this tomato thokku recipe.

1/2 kg of Tomato
2 tbsp of chilly powder
1 spn. of turmeric powder
1/8 spn. of Fenugreek powder
3 tbsp. of sesame oil
1 spn. of mustard
1/2 spn. of asafoetida
Salt as required

Thakkali Thokku Preparation Method

Step 01

Wash and chop tomatoes.

Step 02

Heat gingely oil in a kadai. Splutter mustard seeds.

Step 03

Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Cook in medium flame till it became mushy.

Step 04

Add chilli powder and turmeric powder. Saute till raw smell goes off.

Step 05

Add 1 tbsp. of oil again and saute till tomato mix become thick.(It will take around 15- 20 minutes).

Step 06

When the oil starts to come out from tomato, add asofoetida and fenugreek powder. Mix well and saute for another 2 minutes.

Step 07

Remove from fire and allow it to cool. Store in glass bottles.

1.You can use any oil of your choice.But sesame oil is good for making pickles
2.You can avoid fenugreek powder if you don’t like the taste.
