    Spicy and flavorful Kerala Style Malabar Fish Biriyani.


    Fish Biriyani is a very famous traditional main course of Kerala. I got this recipe from my MIL who is an expert in making biryani. Preparation method of fish biriyani is similar to chicken biriyani with slight changes. You can take any type of fish for making this fish biriyani. I took seer fish and also tried with mackerel fish(ayala) and taste was also good. Hope you all will like this fish biriyani recipe.

    How to make fish Biriyani

    Ingredients

    • 1 Kg of Fish(King Fish, Seer fish)
    • 1/2 Kg of Basmati Rice
    • 3 large Onions
    • 3 tbsp. of Ginger Garlic Paste
    • 5 medium sized Tomatoes
    • 5-6 Green Chillies
    • 2 tsp. of Fennel Seeds
    • 1 spn. of Chilli Powder
    • 1/2 spn. of Turmeric Powder
    • 1/2 spn. of Coriander Powder
    • A handful of chopped Coriander Leaves
    • A handful of chopped Mint Leaves
    • Half of one lemon
    • 100 g of cashew and raisins
    • Oil/Ghee for frying

    Method

    Part 1 : Fry Fish


    Step 01

    Grind 1/2 TS red chilli powder,turmeric powder, 1 TS of ginger garlic paste,fennel seeds,lemon juice and salt.Mix well with hands and make a thick paste.

    Step 02

    Marinate the fish pieces with this paste and keep aside for 1/2 hour.

    Step 03

    Shallow fry fish in low flame.

    Part 2 : Cook Rice


    Step 01

    Boil water in a vessel(for 1 cup of rice i took 1 1/2 cup of water).

    Step 02

    Add 2 S oil, 1 spn. of lemon juice, 1 S vinegar,salt,cardamom and cloves.

    Step 03

    When water starts to boil, add rice.

    Step 04

    Half cook rice and drain well.

    Part 3: Prepare Masala


    Step 01

    Heat oil/ghee in a pan,Add chopped onion and green chillies

    Step 02

    When onion gets fried, add ginger garlic paste and saute well till raw smell goes off.

    Step 03

    Add tomatoes and fry till it became mushy.

    Step 04

    Add all the spices and fry for 5 min.( If you have fish biriyani masala, you can add that. Then reduce the amount of chilli powder)

    Step 05

    Add half amount of chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves.

    Step 06

    Add lemon juice and mix well.

    Step 07

    Add fried fish and mix carefully. Cover lid and cook in a low flame for 1 min.

    Part 4: Dum


    Step 01

    Take a thick bottom vessel.Add rice,fish masala, coriander leaves,mint leaves and ghee alternatively and close the lid and cook in low flame for 15 min.

    Step 02

    Garnish with roasted cashews and raisins.
