Kachil Mezhukkupuratti | Greater Yam Stir Fry

Tradtional side dish of Kerala

Kachil mezhukkupuratti is atradtional side dish of South India especially Kerala. Kachil is also called as greater yam which is a good source of Vitamin C and many other nutrients. Yam helps to fight against cold,flue and provide stong bones. It is also rich in fibre, pottassium, manganese etc. Here I made mezhukkupuratti (stir fry) with kachil by adding grated coconut. I have already posted some healthy and tasty yam recipes like crispy yam chips | chena chips,koottu curry/black gram and yam curry/koottucurry and chena ozhichu koottan/yam curry. How to make Kachil Mezhukkupuratti


1/2 kg of Greater Yam/ kachil
1 cup of Grated coconut
2 tbsp. of crushed Garlic and Shallots
1/4 spn. of Turmeric powder
1/2 spn. of Chilli powder
4 no of Red chilli
1/2 spn. of Mustard seeds
2 springs of Curry leaves
Salt to taste
1 tbsp. of Coconut oil


Step 01

Cut greater yam into small pieces and cook with salt and one glass of water.

Step 02

Two whistles in middle flame will be enough to cook the yam. Keep aside.

Step 03

Heat oil in a pan.Splutter mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chillies.

Step 04

Add crushed shallots garlic mix. Fry for 1 min in low flame.

Step 05

Add turmeric powder and chilli powder. Stir well.

Step 06

Add gkachil puzhukkurated coconut and mix well for one minute.

Step 07

Add cooked greater yam and mix well. Add salt if needed.

Step 08

Mash well with a spatula. Pour one spoon of coconut oil over the stir fry (optional) and close the lid. Serve after five minutes.
