Kozhukkattai Upma
Healthy Breakfast idea from South Indian cuisine
Upma Kozhukattai is the traditional healthy snack/breakfast recipe of South India. Traditional kara pidi is a common breakfast item of Tamil cuisine which is made with rice, dal, grated coconut etc. In Kerala we used to make kozhukkatta which is made with rice flour with jaggery and grated coconut as filling. I came to know about savory version of kozhukkatta after my marriage and found found interesting
In this recipe I have tried a different version of upma kozhukkattai. Steamed rice dumplings with spicy grated coconut mixture. This dish can be served as a healthy snack or as a breakfast . Ingredients
1 cup of Rice flour
1 1/2 cup of Water
10 no of Shallots
2 no of Green chillies
1 spring of Curry leaves
1 cup of Grated coconut
1/4 S of Turmeric powder
1/2 S of Chilli powder
1 S of Mustard seeds
1/2 S of Cumin seeds
1 S of oil
Salt as required
Method
Step 01
Take a heavy bottom vessel.Add water and boil(for 1 cup I took 1 1/2 cup of water).
Step 02
When the water starts boiling add the rice flour(you can use puttu podi or pathiri podi also) to this, stirring continuously without allowing any lumps to form.
Step 03
When the mixture has formed into smooth thick dough, remove from fire. The dough must be thick enough like chapathi dough.
Step 04
Smooth-en the prepared rice flour dough with your hands.
Step 05
Make small balls (like size of a gooseberry) from the dough.
Step 06
Steam cook these dumplings(5-6 min in medium flame).
Step 07
Heat oil in a pan.
Step 08
splutter mustard seeds.Then add cumin seeds
Step 09
Add chopped shallots,green chillies and curry leaves.Saute for a while.
Step 10
Add grated coconut.Fry for 1 minute
Step 11
Add chilli powder and turmeric powder.fry well.
Step 12
Add rice dumplings and salt .Mix well
Step 13
Cover the lid and cook for 1-2 min in low flame. Do not add water.
Step 14
Serve hot with black tea as snack or breakfast.
