Malabar style Mathi vattichathu
Mathi vattichathu Malabar style actually in my mother’s style. This a spicy fish curry and goes well with Kappa or Appam.

Health Benefits of Mathi(Sardine)
Sardine is a type of fish that can work wonders to enhance your health. We all know, fish is a healthy food, but eating sardines definitely has its own added benefits. Sardines are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids which helps in reducing LDL Cholesterol levels which in turn helps in reducing Heart problems. Omega 3 fatty acids also helps in making you hair healthy and shiny, its also makes your skin glow. Mathi (Sardine) has small bones which can be consumed easily which are rich sources of calcium for our bones.
Ingredients
1/2 kg of Mathi(Sardine)
1 cup of Shallots(Cheriya Ulli)
4 nos. of Green Chili
1 tbsp. of Ginger Garlic paste
2 pieces of Pot Tamarind(Kudam Puli)
3 sprigs of Curry leaves
10 nos. of Kashmiri Chili
1/2 spn. of Turmeric powder
1 tbsp. of Oil
10 no of Fenugreek(Methi\Uluva) seeds
2 cup of water
Salt as required
Mathi vattichathu preparation steps
Step 01
Boil Kashmiri Chili in water for 5 minutes. Cool it and grind well and keep aside.Step 02
Heat oil in a Clay pot(Mannu chatti) if you have one or else any pot will do. Add Fenugreek seeds once the oil is hot.Step 03
Add chopped Shallots,green chillies and curry leaves and saute them well in low flame.Step 04
When the onions are brownish add ginger garlic paste and saute them for another 5 minutes.Step 05
Add the red chilli paste prepared in step 1 along with turmeric powder.Step 06
Once the mixture is cooked i.e. the oil will start coming out of the mixture,add Kudampuli and 2 cups of water. Cook well in medium flame and do not cover the pot.Step 07
When the gravy is reduced to its half, reduce the flame to low and add the fish. Cook it for another 5 more minutes.Step 08
Once the gravy thickens remove it from flame.Your tasty Mathi vattichathu is now ready serve it hot and enjoy. Let me know your comments and suggestions also how it went for you.
Notes
You can also use normal tamarind for making this curry but nothing beats Kudampuli.
Since the curry does not contain Tomatoes you can prepare it once and store it, just heat it before you use it. Make sure you remove the Kudampuli before heating it again.
