Traditional Kerala Style Kadala Curry With Roasted Coconut

Kadala curry is one of the famous traditional breakfast side dish in Kerala. Puttum Kadalayum is the best breakfast combination. Kadala curry is very healthy as it is packed with protein. We can serve Kadala curry withPuttu,Set Dosa,Idiyappam,Gothambu Vellayappametc… I have posted Easy Kadala curry without using coconut and Kadala curry with coconut. In this Nadan Varutharacha Kadala Curry, we need to roast the grated coconut along with shallots,garlic,fennel seeds and spices. Hope you all will like this recipes.

how to make kadala curry


  • 3 cups of Bengal gram(Kadala)
  • 1 cup of Grated Coconut
  • 5 no of shallots
  • 2-3 no of garlic
  • 1 spn. of fennel seeds
  • 2 medium sized Tomatoes
  • 2-3 Green Chillies
  • 1/2 spn. of chilli powder
  • 1/4 spn. of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 spn. of coriander powder
  • 1/6 spn. of garama masala
  • Oil to season
  • 1 tspn. of Mustard Seeds
  • A handful of curry leaves
  • 3-4 no of red chillies
  • Salt as required


Step 01

Soak kadala in water for 4 hours. Pressure cook with salt and 3 pinch of turmeric powder.

Step 02

Heat 1 spn. of oil in a pan.

Step 03

Add grated coconut,shallots,garlic,fennel seeds and curry leaves.

Step 04

Fry well in medium flame till golden brown color.

Step 05

Then add all the spices(chilli powder,turmeric powder,coriander powder and garam masala). Fry for 1 minute in low flame.

Step 06

Allow to cool and grind to smooth paste.

Step 01

Add this ground mix to cooked chana.

Step 07

Add sliced tomatoes,green chillies and curry leaves.

Step 08

Cover the pan and cook for 6-7 minutes in low flame.(Or you can cook all the ingredients together ie soaked chana,ground mix,tomatoes and green chillies in low flame flame for 15 minutes)

Step 09

Heat oil another kadai and seasoned with mustard seeds,curry leaves and red chillies.
