Ragi vermicelli upma is a highly nutritious, easy to make breakfast item made with semolina and ragi vermicelli. Upma is the traditional breakfast of south India. It is a very simple and healthy breakfast to start the day. This upma is perfect for weight watchers to count their calories.

I have added roasted gram and many vegetables in this upma. Roasted gram is zero calorie and rich in iron. Vegetables contains lots of vitamins and minerals. Ragi is full calcium and so many nutrients and nowadays it is easily available in supermarkets.

How to make Ragi vermicelli upma?


    • 2 cup of Rava/Semolina
    • 1 cup of ragi Vermicelli(semiya)
    • 1/2 cup of Pottu kadala(Roasted Gram)
    • 1 no of large Onion
    • 5 no of Green chilli
    • 1 cup of Mixed vegetables(carrot,beans,potato,peas etc…)
    • 1 tbsp. of Chopped ginger
    • 1 1/2 cup of water

To season

  • 1tbsp. of Oil
  • 1 spn. of Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 spn. of Chana dal
  • 1 tbsp. of Coriander leaves
  • 2 springs of Curry leaves


Step 01

Dry roast rava for 4-6 min in medium flame and keep aside.

Step 02

Heat oil in a pan.

Step 03

Splutter mustard seeds. Then add chana dal,urd dal coriander leaves and curry leaves

Step 04

Add chopped onion,ginger and green chilli.Fry well till golden brown color.

Step 05

Add roasted gram and fry well till golden brown color.

Step 06

Add chopped vegetables and salt. Fry for 5 min in medium flame.Meantime soak ragi semiya in 1 cup of water for 1 minute.Drain and keep aside.

Step 07

Add soaked ragi semiya and mix well.

Step 08

Add water(for 1 cup of rava, I took 1 ½ cup of water).Close lid of the pan and cook in low flame.

Step 09

When water gets boiled, Add rava and stir well for 2 minute and remove from fire.

Step 09

Serve hot with Tea.
