    Vazhaipoo chutney | banana flower chutney is a very healthy side dish of South India which goes well with rice. We normally make stir fry with banana flower but a chuntey with this was new to me. I found this recipe in a magazine and tried out. It was the same as Coconut chutney(Thenga chammanthi) but with a unique taste.

    Banana flower is rich in iron and many nutrients. Here we are using the outer part of it which we need to boil it before making chutney. As we are grinind the banana flower, we will get all the goodness of it. My daugther loved it and now she is asking me to make it often.     Ingredients

    • 3 no of banana bracts (outer part)
    • 2 spn of Toor dal
    • 3 Green chillies
    • 1/4 cup of grated coconut
    • 6 no of Shallots
    • small amla sized tamarind
    • 1 spn cumin seeds
    • 1/4 spn of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 spn of chilli powder
    • Salt as required

    Method

    Step 1

    Wash banana bracts and cut into small pieces. Boil the pieces in one cup of water for 5 minutes.

    Step 2

    Allow to cool. Meantime heat oil in a kadai

    Step 3

    Add toor dal and fry for 1 minute in medium flame. Add cumin seeds and green chilies. Fry for 1 minute.

    Step 4

    Reduce the flame, add chilli powder and turmeric powder. Fry for 1/2 minute.

    Step 5

    Switch off the flame and allow to cool the ingredients.

    Step 6

    Transfer cooked banana flower, shallots, tamarind, coconut, and fried dal mix.

    Step 7

    Grind for 1/2 minute. Add 1/2 cup of water and grind again till smooth paste.

    Step 8

    Serve with hot rice.
